About the Asia programme

The Asia Programme was established in November 2002 and is headed by Gareth Price. It undertakes original research, in partnership with institutions and specialists in the region, on the key political, economic and security issues affecting Asia. The work is interdisciplinary, has a strong policy bent, and aims to stimulate public understanding of the issues raised by Asia's development.

In addition, the Asia Programme is associated with the Asia Pacific Technology Network (APTN) based at Chatham House.

The programme is currently focused on China and India. The China Project aims to promote understanding of China's current economic, political and social development, and its impact upon the rest of the world. Research focuses upon industrial and financial sector reforms and China's integration with the global economy.

The India Project run by Gareth Price asks how key social, economic and political trends will affect India in 2010. Research focuses on economic reform, as well as assessing the impact of these reforms on the political process.

In addition to the work on China and India, we also run projects on Energy on the Korean peninsula and Asian Trade, and host a variety of meetings on other parts of the region.

The Asia Programme runs four discussion groups on China, Japan, Korea and South Asia. All these groups - made up of members of government, business, academia and the media - meet regularly to discuss contemporary issues in their respective regions.

We also run ad hoc seminars and conferences that are advertised on the events page.
